Corbridge Middle School’s Climate Action Plan establishes the school’s strategy for sustainability covering Autumn 2024 – Summer 2026. We are committed to taking action now to reduce our carbon impact and are working towards achieving ZERO emissions by 2030 (LET’S GO ZERO). Our calculated carbon baseline, established in December 2024, is 885.07 tonnes per year.
Our Climate Action Plan details actions the school and the SLT-Climate Action team will undertake across four major themes:
- Decarbonisation and Energy Efficiency: This includes monitoring energy use, investigating the potential for solar panels, and commissioning a heat decarbonisation plan.
- Climate Adaptation and Resilience: Actions here focus on reducing risks from flooding and overheating, such as writing a heatwave policy and considering building sheltered areas on playgrounds.
- Biodiversity and Green Infrastructure: This theme involves enhancing species diversity on the school estate, including wider engagement with The Nature Park (NENP).
- Culture, Curriculum, Green Skills and Careers: We aim to provide comprehensive teaching about climate change, survey staff confidence in teaching sustainability, and build green skills into the curriculum.
The plan also addresses key operational areas, detailing actions regarding Procurement (including developing a Sustainable Procurement policy), Food (such as identifying catering sustainability criteria and having separate bins for food waste), Transport (developing an active travel plan and encouraging staff carpooling), and Waste (improving recycling infrastructure and education. We have already signed up to the Let’s Go Zero campaign and completed our carbon footprint calculation.
